black bear

this enormous guy was moving very slowly. we were told that he might not be out at all, since it's getting to be that time of year. but there he was, very intently rummaging through a pile of nuts. the sheer mass of the black bear is extremely impressive.

highlander in the lowlands

yes, that's indeed a Scottish Highland Cow - right here in the lowland marshes of coastal southeast Georgia. this was one of the few residents of Oatland who decided to cooperate with me, and actually let me get a photo. and yes, those bright greens are in fact the colors of late november in the south. ;-)

here's an alternate version of the shot...

dendrites

we finally made it out to Oatland Island on saturday. it's a pretty cool little "environmental education center" not far outside of downtown Savannah. we saw wolves, panthers, a black bear, bald eagles, owls, etc... they are all in captivity, but they seem to have pretty reasonably sized habitat areas. still, it is kind of depressing to know that a lot of the animals there are so endangered that you really never would be able to see them in the wild.

in any event, i will most likely be posting some photos from Oatland over the next few days. unfortunately, it was a bit overcast, but i still managed to get a few keepers. hope you enjoy. today's image is just a shot looking up into the trees. kind of reminds me of Escher's Puddle woodcut.
