went for a hike Saturday morning in part of Gunpowder Falls State Park. big hills, river, streams, creeks, a cave or two, ruins of several mills (gunpowder, lumber, flour) from the 17 and 18 hundreds, etc...

and then out there in the middle of nowhere, you spot an old abandoned car next to a collapsed shack. how it ever got there is anyone's guess. no roads or large paths within a few miles of the spot... though there is a bar with eyehooks that appears to have been soldered onto the front end more recently . in any event, expect more photos in the near future. anyone have any idea what kind of car this might be?

Stella Artois has a new European ad campaign that's pure genius:

This summer, Stella Artois been running a campaign in magazines, newspapers and outdoor, supporting their "Live Film" initiative. The ads are like a "Where's Waldo" of film trivia. All portray typically English scenes that have been invaded by characters, props and scenarios from classic films. Each of the three ads contains approximately 20 films.

It's the perfect way to get people to stare at your ads for hours on end, discuss ithem with friends, research them, etc... hell of a lot of fun - check them out at adland and The Observer

Colonial Park

Gate of Colonial Park - Savannah's oldest cemetary, located in the center of the historic district... this monument / gate was funded by the DAR, who had it built around the same time that they destroyed a load of tombstones while "cleaning" them with a heavy ammonia solution. nice of them to name the gate after themselves too.

Sherman's troops also did a lot of damage to the site, when they camped there in 1864 and knocked over markers to make way for their tents and whatnot.

Well children... listen up: we here in the Coastal Empire live within spitting distance of a 50yr-old lost live H-Bomb.

If you ever watch the Discovery or History Channels, then you have most likely already heard about this, but these new developments happened to be one of the headlines on WashingtonPost.com today... so i thought that i would share a little bit of the always-odd history of the area where many of my photos are taken ~ Tybee Island, GA.

Lost: One H-Bomb. Call Owner
After 47 Years, a WMD Remains AWOL

Just after midnight on Feb. 5, 1958, two U.S. Air Force jets, each traveling 500 mph, collided 35,000 feet over the Georgia countryside. Improbably, all four crew members survived and the accident might have passed into dim memory if not for the thermonuclear weapon jettisoned off Tybee Island, Ga.

The bomb is still there.

so, the government just decided to call it a day and leave it where it lay - you know, let future generations worry about it (sound familiar?)... but as it turns out, a retired Air Force officer has made it his hobby to track the monster down:

Clearly, the Air Force would have been glad to let it go at that. However, it did not count on the determination of Derek Duke, a 60-year-old retired Air Force officer who lives nearby and for more than six years has been searching for the bomb in the waters around Tybee Island, about 16 miles from Savannah. Responding to Duke's claim that he had found an area of high radiation the Air Force returned last September to look again.

so, does this mean that when we go to the beach down here, we're actually "X-TREME" swimming and sunbathing? the eMpTy-V should be here doing another Jackass or Punk'd spinoff. bbbbbbbb...

Jen and I were having some fun with the cam while driving home on saturday night. she started taking some really cool shots of the lights, with slow shutter speed. we took this one while passing some kind of factory or plant on the way back out to the islands. hoping to eventually get the time to play with some of these shots in Aftereffects, set them to some good tunes, etc... we'll see.

one of my personal favorites. i took this one about two years ago, with my first digital camera. it may not look like it, but there's very little post-processing on this one - just a sepia gradient overlay and some contrast tweaking.

i love the texture of the sand in the foreground, the warped horizon-line of the ocean, the grainy look of the sky, and the loose sand that's blowing away from the cam.... seems like it's all being drawn towards JLR in the background there.

seems like my digital camera is starting to crap out on me. have only had it for maybe a year and a half, but more often than not lately, most of my shots turn out either blurry or completely washed out (or both) - regardless of wether i have set it manually or just used the automatic function. can you say "planned obsolescence"?... oh well, got some good use out of it, i guess. anyway, this is prompting me to have some more fun altering the photos after the fact.
